I was very fortunate to have been a student of Dr Miller while at SAIS in the mid-80s. Those classes were a highlight of my time there, and while we had an inkling of the work that went behind the classes, I had no idea of just how interesting Dr Miller's time at CIA really was. Great piece!
I had wanted to work for CIA for a time, and as a Chinese and Russian speaker, everyone assumed I worked for them, but I went into the private sector instead, working on helping bring foreign investment into China and the former USSR. So I'm partly responsible for the current state of US-Chinese economic relations, though in fairness to myself, I did see that shipping so much American manufacturing to China was going to have ramifications for Americans down the line (not that the company shareholders gave a damn about that).
Pretty sure the US taxpayer subsidized a lot of China with IMF loans starting in 1981. The United States subsidized communism essentially, W.Wilson, standard Oil, Herbert Hoover, the federal reserve, J Henry Schroeder. They’d call the CIA the Central investment agency. Communism ended because we essentially could no longer afford to subsidize it.
I was really fortunate to have spent a year (1985-86) working after University at the Bureau of Intelligence & Research at State on Chinese Political affairs. It was the most interesting year of my professional life, and the changes going on in China were fascinating to observe. Dr Miller was absolutely considered the great China political expert in the Government. This was a really enjoyable interview to read.

Thank you! That's very kind of you. Did you do similar/adjacent work in your career too?
