Extremely interesting essay. I had the good fortune to study in Beijing in 1983/4 at the 第一外国与学员。 I was there for six months and managed to travel the length of the country. I was back in Shanghai in 2004, 5, and 6 actually teaching English at 第二公约大学。 Fabulous.
